Teenager's 80km trek inspires CBCity's youth
Many adults find the renowned Larapinta trail in Central Australia a real challenge.
But not only did 14-year-old Panania boy, Cobalt Walsh, hike 80 kilometres of the gruelling long-distance walking-track in five days, he also led a team of four boys.
Cobalt’s achievement earned him City of Canterbury Bankstown’s Children and Youth Leadership Award in 2024 and now he is inspiring other young people to nominate for this year’s Awards.
The teenage boy meticulously planned every detail of the scouting adventure, from safety and risk assessments to food menus and cultural activities with Traditional Owners along the way.
“It was a big responsibility, but I loved the challenge,” Cobalt said. “Leadership isn’t about telling people what to do, it’s about making sure everyone is okay and being someone they can rely on. The award gave me more confidence to keep pushing myself.”
His mum, Claire Geary, said she couldn’t be prouder.
“When he first told me he wanted to do the hike, I had mixed feelings, I was both worried and proud. It was a huge challenge for a 14-year-old, but he was so determined,” she said.
“Seeing him on stage accepting the award was incredibly special. He’s a leader, but also such a kind and humble young man.” Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Bilal El-Hayek said he was in awe of Cobalt’s achievement and proud to present him with the award last year.
“Cobalt shows us what young people can achieve when they’re given the chance to lead,” Mayor El-Hayek said.
“His story is a reminder that recognition can empower youth to keep striving, and that’s exactly what these awards are all about.
I am looking forward to seeing all the amazing young people who are nominated for this year’s Awards.”
Nominations for the City of Canterbury Bankstown’s Children and Youth Awards are now open, and Council is looking for extraordinary young people just like Cobalt.
The Awards are open to local children in years 3-6 and young people in years 7-12, across nine different categories. Nominations close 5pm, Sunday 5 October.
Looking ahead, Cobalt said he’s eager to keep testing himself.
“I would tell other young people to take every opportunity they get. Everything you put in, you’ll get back. So, challenge yourself, give it your best and you’ll be surprised at what you can achieve.”
